Embark on a Lake Skadar boat tour to Kom Monastery and uncover a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and adventure. Experience for yourself why this tour was a bestseller on Lake Skadar during the 2024 season, a testament to its unique and enriching nature. Travel aboard a traditional wooden boat and savour the delicious local wine while your guide reveals all the fascinating stories from the region.

Your adventure begins in the picturesque fishing village of Virpazar, conveniently located a short drive from Podgorica. After a brief orientation, you’ll board a traditional wooden boat, a vessel that has plied these waters for generations. There’s simply no better way to explore the lake’s hidden beauty.

As you glide through narrow canals, you’ll encounter the ruins of Lesendro Fortress. This centuries-old structure, often called “The Key of Lake Skadar,” now serves as a picturesque resting place for local birds. Next, discover the hidden beauty of three islands adorned with thousands of water lilies. It’s a sight that never fails to captivate, offering perfect photo opportunities.

The crown jewel of this journey is Kom Monastery. Perched atop Odrin Hill and accessible only by boat, this 15th-century marvel is one of Montenegro’s best-kept secrets. Constructed between 1415 and 1427, it has weathered centuries of history and stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.

As you approach, you’ll be struck by the monastery’s imposing structure and prominent bell tower – hallmarks of medieval Serbian Orthodox architecture. However, it’s the interior that truly astonishes. The monastery houses some of the best-preserved frescoes in the area. Their vibrant colours and intricate details offer a window into medieval Montenegro’s artistic and spiritual life.

During your 30-minute visit, you’ll uncover the monastery grounds, breathe in the sweet scent of wild thyme that blankets the hill, and soak in panoramic views of Lake Skadar. It’s a moment of tranquillity that feels worlds away from the bustle of everyday life.

Your journey doesn’t end at the monastery. On the return trip, you’ll pause in a secluded spot on the lake for an authentic taste of Montenegro. Savour locally-produced wine while taking in the unspoiled beauty of your surroundings. If you’re feeling warm after the exploration, you’ll have the opportunity to plunge into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Skadar for a refreshing swim.

As you glide back to Virpazar, reflect on the day’s experiences. From navigating hidden waterways to standing before centuries-old art and enjoying the simple pleasure of swimming in one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes – this tour encapsulates everything that makes Montenegro unique.

Whether you’re passionate about history and nature or seek unique experiences, this Lake Skadar boat tour to Kom Monastery promises a day of discovery and wonder. Amazing views, fun tour guide, lots of wine
My girlfriend and I went on the 3-hour tour from 4 pm. We chose this time because we wanted to see the sunset on Skadar Lake and we couldn’t have been happier with our choice: incredible views, great atmosphere and lots of wine. Our guide, Petar, was informative and fun and had great energy. We saw many birds and the monastery and dipped in the lake too. The whole boat had a fantastic time; we decided to go out for dinner after the tour. The Kingfisher company is very professional and well-organized. I recommend the tour and the 3-hour option if you have the time because there is so much to see. I loved every minute of it!

Perfect afternoon in great company
We did the 3-hour boat tour for 30 euros each (including the 5 euro NP fee). It was amazing! Our boat waded through passages of Lilly fields, and we saw birds and ducks. We had a 25-minute stop at Kom Monastery and swam in the lake. We were joined by a friendly English-speaking guide and fellow passengers from around the globe who chatted over a few glasses of free wine, doughnuts, and juice. It was an excellent afternoon. On exiting the boat in Virpazar, we had a walk around the little fishing village, which has restaurants and a few souvenir stalls.

Lots of fun
This was a last-minute booking, and we don’t regret anything! Easy to find, well signposted and helpful crew. The guy running our tour was super patient, helpful and fun. We had a great time, and he shared some excellent knowledge. We didn’t bring snacks or a towel, but I’d say if you get peckish, you can bring a little snack (a group of people on our tour had a fun-blown picnic!) There is plenty of wine, and some local pastries with honey are shared around. It was a great 3 hours spent; the monastery was smaller than I expected, and the island is riddled with spiders, but that’s part of the charm. Would recommend!

It was nice from the beginning!
The guide completed the group, and we went to the boat. As we set off, the guide introduced himself and the captain. He talked a lot about nature and history. We received wine doughnuts, and the guide took photos of us with beautiful views of nature. The boat was comfortable and had plenty of space. I recommend this 3-hour temple tour on Lake Skadar.

Best boat tours on Skadar Lake are with Kingfisher - no doubt!
Brilliant guide, knowledgeable about the lake and local area. Much time was spent on the lake, including local food and drink. The kids enjoyed it too, especially the swimming.

The boat trip on Lake Skadar was fantastic - book with Kingfisher!
We had a lot of fun, and the scenery was breathtaking. Eva was invaluable, explaining everything clearly, and Stefan, always friendly, ensured a pleasant atmosphere. They also offered a typical local sweet and drinks, adding a special touch to the experience. It was a beautiful and interesting trip that I highly recommend.

Great guide - I really recommend it
Generally speaking - it's great. It was a lovely, large, quiet boat, and there were not too many people during the cruise tasting local wine - a plus for those who don't want water and juice. Beautiful views, swimming in the lake was also 😉

Great trip with Kingfishers!
Set off on time, the boat was only partially filled, which was nice. The skipper was great, full of interesting information about the lake and surrounds, with excellent English. Answered all questions posed. The scenery and wildlife were beautiful. Wine, juice, water and pastries are on board. Walking up to the monastery was VERY hot, so beware. It was a lovely day overall. Would recommend!!

We had a great time with Kingfisher!
The boat was very nice; the local wine tasting went great, with multiple options to choose from. The views were stunning! And the water, even in October, was warm to swim in. Our guide, Petar (I could have spelt the name wrong), was very helpful and told us many stories about the place. I highly recommend it!

Excellent boat tour on Lake Skadar
Amazing views! Captain Petar was very friendly and kind and shared much information about the lake. We also tasted typical red and white wine and local snacks; we stopped near water lilies to take beautiful pictures. Almost at the end of the tour, we also stopped in the middle of the lake and were able to go swimming for a few minutes. It was nice! Highly recommend!
