My first encounter with Kom Monastery and why you should visit

When I started my first day as a tour guide in Virpazar, I was equal parts excited and terrified. Virpazar, the charming little town that serves as the heart of Lake Skadar‘s tourism scene, was buzzing with its usual energy. Fishermen were hauling in their morning catch, tourists were sipping coffee at the waterfront cafes, and I was trying not to look like I had no idea what I was doing.

My first assignment? Familiarize myself with one of the lake’s most iconic landmarks – Kom Monastery – so I could lead tours there in the future.

To say I felt the pressure would be an understatement. This wasn’t just a casual boat ride; this was my chance to explore the lake and a historic monastery that I’d soon be introducing to guests as part of the best boat tour on Lake Skadar. I wanted to get it right, not just for the sake of my new job but because I’d always believed that if you’re going to tell a story, you should know it inside and out. And let’s face it, I couldn’t precisely “wing” centuries of Montenegrin history.

So, there I was – armed with a notebook, some mild nerves, and a boat ticket – ready to set sail. Little did I know this adventure would leave me entirely enchanted by this incredible place.

Starting the tour from Virpazar’s pier

Stepping onto the boat in Virpazar, I felt a strange combination of excitement and jitters. This wasn’t just a casual outing; I was heading to a place I’d soon enthusiastically recommend to visitors. I couldn’t shake the feeling of pressure – after all, a first impression can really set the tone, can’t it?

I was lost in nature as the boat found its way through the narrow river. The lake seemed so full of life, with marshlands everywhere you looked. Did you know Lake Skadar is home to around 280 different bird species? It’s one of those places that feels alive, almost as if it has a heartbeat.

And then, right on cue, I spotted a Dalmatian Pelican soaring effortlessly above us. I chuckled and thought, “Well, at least he knows where he’s going!

The journey through time (and water;) to Kom Monastery

As we navigated through narrow canals and past fields of water lilies, I felt we were travelling across the water and through time. Each ripple seemed to carry whispers of centuries past, Ottoman occupations and Slavic kingdoms.

The boat ride itself was a feast for the senses. The gentle lapping of water against the hull, the lake’s fresh scent, and the surrounding mountains created a perfect symphony. As a tour guide, I’ve always appreciated the journey as much as the destination, but this particular trip felt special. It was as if Lake Skadar was preparing me for the wonder at Kom Monastery.

First glimpse of Kom Monastery

Kom Monastery in the distance, surrounded by the natural beauty of Skadar Lake.

After about an hour of serene sailing (and only one minor wrong turn – hey, even skilled captains get lost sometimes!), we approached a small island. A short 15-minute walk separated us from Kom Monastery, and with each step, my anticipation grew. As we climbed Odrin Hill, the vegetation thinned, and suddenly, there it was – Kom Monastery.

Constructed in the 14th century under the reign of the Balšić dynasty, Kom Monastery is a remarkable testament to medieval Montenegrin architecture. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it served as a spiritual refuge for monks and a cultural epicentre for the region during a time when foreign invasions constantly threatened Montenegro.

Kom Monastery was crucial in Montenegro’s history, especially during the turbulent Ottoman era. It was a home for monks, where vital manuscripts and religious artefacts were preserved.

Even more fascinating, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, Montenegro’s most famous ruler and poet, was ordained here as a bishop. Standing in the same place where such an influential figure once stood gave me goosebumps, not just because of the breeze coming off the lake.

Falling for Kom Monastery (not literally, thankfully)

The serene atmosphere was palpable, as if the very air was imbued with centuries of prayer and contemplation. I was immediately drawn in by the spirituality that seemed to fill every corner of this sacred place.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of a 14th-century monk painstakingly painting these masterpieces, only for a 21st-century tour guide like me to stand there thinking, “Wow, this would make an incredible Instagram post.

As a seasoned tour guide, I’ve been privileged to visit numerous breathtaking locations. However, something uniquely profound about Kom Monastery resonated with me on a deeply personal level, in a way I hadn’t anticipated.

At this moment, I realized I had a problem: how would I condense this into a snappy tour guide spiel? “Welcome to Kom Monastery, where the Wi-Fi is weak, but the spiritual connection is strong!” Maybe not. I scribbled a few notes and decided to head back to the boat.

I thought, “If this isn’t the best boat tour on Lake Skadar, I don’t know what is!” I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore such a meaningful place and to share it with others.

It is your turn to discover Kom Monastery

Even after 8 years, I firmly believe that Kom Monastery is not just a place to visit – it’s an immersive experience that intertwines Montenegro’s rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re intrigued by its ties to the Balšić dynasty and Petar II Petrović-Njegoš or simply seeking tranquillity by the shores of Lake Skadar, this monastery has something to enthral every visitor.

The frescoes are stunning, the architecture feels like a step back, and Lake Skadar’s views are breathtaking. Standing in this place, with so much history etched into every corner, you can’t help but feel a deep connection to the centuries of devotion and strength that have shaped it.

Just, remember to bring comfortable shoes – those medieval monks didn’t believe in elevators, and pack your sense of wonder and maybe even a notebook – you might be inspired to write down your story 😉

I’ll see you in the next blog post. Until then, book your Skadar Lake Kom Monastery boat tour here!
